In the Classroom

Our children do so much in their school day that sometimes they need a little reminding about who popped in, what they saw and what made them interested. We'll help you be a fly on the wall and find out more about their day-to-day school life and their teachers.

Power Hour

Power Hour is a six week programme that happens twice a year in Senior Infants and 1st Class. It gives children the opportunity to read at their own level of competency. Each class is divided into 5/6 groups or stations and each station will focus on reading, hand writing, or words (i.e. spelling, grammar, phonics etc). Power hour takes place four mornings a week with the help of support teachers and/or parent volunteers.

There are many positive benefits:
  1. Quieter children have more opportunity to find their voices in smaller groups.
  2. Some children with English as a second language or who are learning English gain confidence.
  3. Children who need additional help with their reading are more easily identifiable.
  4. Children enjoy demonstrating their reading abilities to parents who come into the classroom.
  5. The parents who can volunteer get to know their child's classmates and get a real feel for the classroom.
  6. It can help foster a love of reading outside the classroom.

Greystones CNS welcomes parental involvement in the classroom so if you can give even one hour a week, please get in touch. Any parent taking part in Power Hour will need to go through the Garda Vetting process.
