Climate Protests

12/17/2019

Begun by Greta Thunberg when she was just 15, #FridaysForFuture has become a student led movement to demand action in the face of the climate emergency. Children from Greystones CNS have participated in all the local strikes to date.
When do we participate?
A few Fridays throughout the year.

Fun factors for the children:
  • Child-led movement to draw attention to the effects of climate change
  • Engage with the issues of climate change in a proactive manner while making some noise
  • An opportunity to express themselves creatively by making posters etc
How can you help?
We’d love to organise some poster making workshops before the next strike. If you’re a creative person with energy to put into helping the kids express themselves we need you!

We’d like to create a more structured way to participate for the younger kids by having pledge boards and opportunities to have their voices heard. For this we need volunteers to help organise in the weeks leading up to the strikes and on the day in Burnaby Park.

What we do

The Green Committee supports the school by creating awareness about the environment in the widest sense of the word through numerous projects such as:

  • Green STEM: incorporating environmental awareness and sustainability across a number of different themes in the classroom
  • Climate Protests: working with the teachers and the Arts Committee to engage pupils creatively in the subject of the climate crisis by creating posters and banners
  • Irish Tree Week/establishing a tree nursery: teaching pupils about the need for trees and to helping to spark an interest in nature
  • Green Earth Day: a full day of environmental awareness events such as STEM classes for all years, story time, beach clean and a zero-waste lunch
  • Heritage in Schools (HiS): an annually run programme where each class has two sessions with a HiS expert.
  • New School Grounds: continuous work on developing a natural playground and garden

Activities such as local beach cleans are run through the Greystones Junior Tidy Towns initiative and contribute to the Green School Flag programme.
